Hereford is the county town and largest city of the province of Herefordshire. It lies on the River Wye, about 26 km east of the border with Wales. Herefordshire has many beautiful holiday houses and self catering cottages. Many of the holiday homes are in rural Herefordshire, in and around the cities of Kingston, Leominster, Hereford, Ledbury and Ross-on-Wye are the most beautiful holiday rentals.

The name derives from the Anglo-Saxon "Here," an army or a group of soldiers, and the "Ford, a crossing of a river. The Welsh name for Hereford is Henffordd and also Caerffawydd. Hereford is known as a commercial center surrounded by farmland and dynamic with a very stunning countryside. Products from Hereford include subsequent cider, beer, leather goods, poultry and livestock, including the famous Hereford cattle.

The Hereford Cathedral dates from 1079 and contains the Mappa Mundi, a medieval world map from the 13th century. It also includes the world famous Chained Library. Hereford was once the site of a castle, Hereford Castle of
